In the early 1990's, a tractor mechanic from China nicknamed Steelhead enters illegally into Japan to search for his girlfriend Xiu Xiu. To make ends meet, he joins his friend, Jie, in Shinjuku in doing menial labor. Steelhead finds out that Xiu Xiu has married Eguchi, a Japanese Yakuza leader. Steelhead decides to stay on in Japan and to obtain citizenship, he agrees to work for Eguchi as a killer. Soon, Steelhead gets used to the power and finds himself embroiled so deeply in the ways of the underworld that there is no turning back...

HONG KONG - Emperor Motion Pictures on Friday denied reports that the Jackie Chan drama "Shinjuku Incident" has met with resistance from the Film Bureau in Beijing, the government body that must approve films for release in China. The $15 million drama in which action star Chan plays an illegal immigrant working in Japan, originally was scheduled to open in Hong Kong and China this month. Shot in Tokyo earlier this year, the film now is scheduled for release in China in the first quarter of 2009, an EMP spokesperson told the Hollywood Reporter. Reports in Chinese language media on Friday said director Derek Yee's film was refused a release permit in China due to its negative portrayal of Chinese as laborers and gangsters in Japan. EMP denied the reports and said that the film had not yet been submitted for permit approval. "Post-production of the film is still underway and the film has not yet been sent to the Chinese censors," the EMP spokesperson said. The film also stars Ken Watanabe ("Letters from Iwo Jima") and Daniel Wu ("Protégé").

KSM hat sich die Rechte an dem neuesten Jackie-Chan-Film „Shinjuku Incident“ gesichert. Die Lizenz beinhaltet neben den Home-Entertainment-Rechten auch Kino- und Fernsehrechte. Es ist ein Jackie-Chan-Movie mit sehr dramatischen Momenten und handelt von chinesischen Einwanderern, die nach Tokio kommen. Jackie Chan übernimmt in diesem Film nicht nur die Hauptrolle, er hat ihn auch zusammen mit seiner Firma JCE Movies Limited selbst produziert. Regie führt Hongkong-Film-Award-Gewinner Derek Yee, ein sehr guter Freund von Jackie Chan. Gedreht wurde mit einem zweistelligen Millionen-Dollar-Budget in Tokio und China.

1990 kommt der Arbeiter Steelhead (Jackie Chan) zusammen mit seinem Kumpel Jie illegal nach Japan, um hier nach Steelheads Freundin Xiu Xiu zu suchen. Als sie erfahren, dass Xiu Xiu einen Yakuza-Boss geheiratet hat, lässt sich Steelhead von diesem als Killer engagieren. Bald steckt er aber so tief in den Machenschaften der Yakuza, dass es für ihn kein Zurück mehr gibt...

Director Derek Yee has confirmed in a recent interview in Hong Kong that due to some of the grahpic violence in Shinjuku Inicident, which he was not able to cut off to pass the census, Shinjuku Inicident will not to be shown in Mainland China. But he also mentioned that the violence was only part of the film and he had given much dramatic contents for Jackie to work with.

Jackie Chan's latest film "Shinjuku Incident" will have its world premiere at this year's Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF), according to sources close to the production.

Pic, about a Chinese immigrant in 1990s Japan who finds himself embroiled with the Yakuza, is skedded to open the festival ahead of its Apr 2 Hong Kong theatrical run.

The film, which cost upwards of $15 million, was produced by Emperor Dragon Movies, a new subsidiary of Emperor Motion Pictures (EMP). EMP has already sold Singaporean rights for "Shinjuku" to distrib Scorpio East (Variety, Mar 4, 2008).

The HKIFF runs from Mar 22 through to Apr 13.

Lovehkfilm Review

Shinjuku Incident tries to be an immigrant drama and a gangland thriller, and it only succeds partially at both. Derek Yee has a hard time combining his two genres, and Jackie Chan is a tough sell as the film's morally murky, mult-layered lead. Still, Shinjuku Incident is an entertaining and even compelling commercial thriller that only fails if one brings in massive expectations.

As an exploration of larger themes, Shinjuku Incident proves a bit unfocused, but it's not without an ability to affect. The film touches upon complex ideas and issues, and even if it can't tackle all of them satisfyingly, it still supplies enough for an involving and even harrowing two hours. Shinjuku Incident works best as a commercial film, proving entertaining and sometimes thought-provoking, and is only hampered when it attempts to be something greater. Similarly, Jackie Chan is an effective lead, but his reach here exceeds his grasp. In the end, both the film and its lead actor are not as good as they want to be - but they both try very hard.
