Warner Home Video have announced the Region 1 DVD release of Warner Home Video Director's Series: Stanley Kubrick Collection on 23rd October 2007. In the works for some time now, the films of Stanley Kubrick have been restored and remastered for this new collection which is expected to feature a large number of both archive and new bonus features. A full press release is yet to be issued, but we do have some preliminary information, prices and even some artwork for you… Warner have revealed the following titles due on 23rd October… 2001: A Space Odyssey (2-Disc Special Edition) - $26.99 SRP A Clockwork Orange (2-Disc Special Edition) - $26.99 SRP Eyes Wide Shut (2-Disc Special Edition) - $26.99 SRP The Shining (2-Disc Special Edition) - $20.97 SRP Barry Lyndon - $19.97 SRP Lolita - $19.97 SRP Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures (Kubrick Collection 2001 Release) - $19.97 SRP Full Metal Jacket (Deluxe Edition) is also listed but currently only for Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD, though it is listed as part of the complete Warner Home Video Director's Series: Stanley Kubrick Collection which is priced at $79.92 SRP but only includes the Special Edition titles and the A Life in Pictures documentary disc (no Lolita or Barry Lyndon). Initial specs on the Special Edition titles suggest Widescreen transfers and 5.1 Surround audio only. Damit wäre zu befürchten, dass es von Lolita und Barry Lyndon (alte DVD nicht anamorph) keine Neuauflage gibt. Mal abwarten, was so alles an Bonus geboten wird.

Sollte die Frage auf ein deutsches Release abzielen...im Warner Thread im Code 2 Deutschland Forum wird ein Dezember Termin für die SEs (die Box wird hier wohl auch kommen) genannt.

Clockwork Orange ist doch schon in der bereits erhältlichen Fassung (RC2) im Seitenverhältnis 1.66:1, das ist meines Erachtens das Format, in dem der Film auch im Kino gezeigt wurde. Ist die Code-1-DVD etwa in 4:3?
Meines Erachtens hat Kubrick alle Filme ab Lolita (mit Ausnahme von 2001) in 1.37:1 open matte gedreht, wobei als Seitenverhältnis fürs Kino 1.66:1 angestrebt war. Auf den europäischen DVDs ist das auch so umgesetzt. Erst ab Shining hat er meines Wissens auch mit Blick auf eine zukünftige Verwertung in 4:3 gedreht, sprich auch darauf geachtet, dass der Film in 4:3 präsentiert werden konnte (also keine Mikrofone, Leuchten etc. im 4:3-Bereich sind - was bis auf den Schatten des Hubschraubers in der Anfangssequenz von Shining ja auch geklappt hat). Wahrscheinlich wurde er erst durch das Aufkommen des Home-Video-Marktes zu dieser Arbeitsweise verleitet, da in der Anfangszeit es ja eine Seltenheit war, dass Filme auf Video im korrekten Seitenverhältnis liefen, i.d.R. waren die Videos nur in 4:3. Indem Kubrick schon beim Drehen darauf achtete, dass seine Filme sowohl in 4:3 als auch in 1.66:1 gezeigt werden konnten, behielt er die Kontrolle darüber, was die Zuschauer seiner Filme zu sehen bekamen. Das passt dann ja auch zu dem ihm nachgesagten Perfektionismus. Das gilt meines Wissens aber nicht für die Filme vor Shining. Wenn hier die US-DVD in 4:3 sind, dann ist das eigentlich nur Glück, dass der Bildaufbau trotzdem noch akzektabel ist, da hier eine 4:3-Auswertung gar nicht angedacht war (und die Veröffentlichung in 4:3 auf Video und bei Fernsehausstrahlungen von Kubrick nur für Shining, Full Metal Jacket und Eyes Wide Shut vorgeschrieben worden ist).

Interessant wird aber sein, ob die zukünftigen anamorphen DVDs auch im richtigen Kinoseitenverhältnis sein werden, denn das ist bei den Filmen 1.66:1 (bis auf 2001). Bei der Jubiläumsausgabe von Dr. Strangelove hat man das korrekte Seitenverhältnis trotz anamorphem Widescreen ja beibehalten (dadurch hat man schmale schwarze Balken links und rechts, da 16:9=1,77 und nicht 1,66). Darauf wird man hoffentlich bei den neuen DVDs auch achten, ebenfalls bei den HD-Veröffentlichungen (1920:1080=1,77), d.h. links und rechts muss ein kleiner schwarzer Rand gelassen werden. Macht man das nicht so, fehlt oben und unten etwas vom Bild und das kann man eigentlich nicht wollen.

Das die Filme aber in einer 16:9-Version erscheinen ist sicherlich zu begrüßen. Mit der zunehmenden Verbreitung von 16:9-Fernsehern würde Kubrick heute bestimmt auch eine Widescreen-DVD/Blu ray/HD DVD/HDTV-Fassung wollen.

Noch etwas: Hoffentlich wird Shining in Europa wieder in der kürzeren Version herausgebracht und nicht in der US-Langfassung, da Kubrick den Film für die internationale Veröffentlichung selbst gekürzt hat. Meines Erachtens tun die Kürzungen dem Film auch gut und heben sogar seinen künstlerischen Wert, da der Film so noch mehr Interpretationsspielraum lässt. Außerdem würde Kubrick sicherlich nicht gefallen, wenn plötzlich mitten im Film die Synchronsprecher wechseln oder Untertitel eingeblendet werden müssen.
Ferner zu Shining: Bitte für die deutsche, französische, spanische und italienische Version die entsprechend lokalisierten, extra von Kubrick für diese Sprachen gedrehten Szenen mit Nicholson an der Schreibmaschine und den vielen Schreibmaschinenseiten, die alle das gleiche Sprichwort enthalten, via Multi-Angle in der europäischen Version einfügen. Für die deutsche Version hat Kubrick nämlich z.B. extra das das englische Sprichwort "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" durch das deutsche Sprichwort "Was du heute kannst besorgen, das verschiebe nicht auf morgen" ersetzt. Die Schreibmaschinenseiten zeigen hier alle das deutsche Sprichwort, hat er extra für die deutsche Fassung gedreht (entsprechend auch franz., span. und ital. Fassung mit landestypischen Sprichwörtern). Auf der alten DVD ist das ja einfach nur untertitelt worden. Also bitte Warner diesmal etwas mehr Arbeit in die DVD-Version investieren!

Ja klar, beide Fassungen wären toll. Vielleicht auf einer Disc durch Seamless-Branching. Fände es nur nicht schön, wenn man lediglich die US-Langfassung für Europa herausbrächte, da ja die kürzere Version von Kubrick extra für Europa erstellt wurde.

Da kommt in den nächsten Monaten sicher noch einiges hinzu.

Die Extras hören sich F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-S-C-H an (und ich tippe das nicht grundlos in Großbuchstaben!). Hoffentlich geht nicht allzu viel Kubrick-Magie flöten bei dieser Unmenge an Bonusmaterial. Die Kommentatoren sollten sich in Sachen Interpretation der Werke zurückhalten und hauptsächlich auf die historischen und technischen Aspekte der Filme eingehen (gerade im Falle von "Mindfucks" wie 2001 und The Shining, wobei ich mich auf Infos von Steadicam-Erfinder Garrett Brown sehr freue).

Hm, bei den Audiokommentaren freue ich mich auf den zu 2001 eher nicht so. Ohne Beistand eines Filmhistorikers oder -kritikers könnte die Konversation von Dullea und Lockwood schnell in ein müdes "Do you remember when...?"-"No, I had a day off when they shot that"-Geplänkel abgleiten.

Auch verstehe ich nicht, was Jay Cocks am Mikrofon neben der Darstellerriege zu suchen hat.

Aber was soll's, das Set ist sowieso gekauft.
