Da bin ich mal gespannt, werde ihn hoffentlich (wie schon Sympahty for Mr Vengeance) aufm FFF sehen. Es sei denn die Korea DVD kommt vorher raus...

Gemischte Reaktionen aus Cannes:

Mike D'Angelo, writing for the AV Club, finds the film "has no sense of rhythm or flow whatsoever. From the moment we first meet our tragic hero, a priest turned bloodsucker played by Song Kang-ho ([yesterday] was 'The Host' alumni day), 'Thirst' moves like it's just remembered the parking meter is about to expire ten blocks away and can't find anything but flip-flops to wear. New settings and characters are introduced so willy-nilly, and consecutive scenes have so little formal or tonal consistency, that you're generally floundering even as you're gasping."

"[T]he movie turns into a kind of grisly screwball-love story between the priest and a demure housewife (Kim Ok-bin, called, more than once around town, the Korean Beyoncé)." The Boston Globe's Wesley Morris: "She's awakened first by plain-old lust, then by a lust for blood. Song and Kim are wonderful apart and together, licking and sucking each other's fingers and toes (accordingly, I'll salivate, on some future day, over how South Korea has some of Earth's best actors). They're doing 'Let the Wrong One in.' The movie contains its pleasures: it's kinky and crazy, perverse and perfectly shot, assembled, and staged.... Unfortunately, Park puts this energetic gorgeousness into what, for all its sex, comedy, visual ingenuity (his camera really can do anything), is still a vampire film. And vampire films by their very nature come with a set of guidelines that, to my disappointment, Park adheres to. This is a director who, even at his most problematic, does things his way. Here he's following rules he can bend but can't bring himself to break."

Thirst is not, as some observers expected, a return to a more audience friendly approach - Park is aiming far above the heads of mainstream viewers. But even as it confounds some audiences, Thirst’s sheer creativity and cinematic brio will drive word of mouth and propel it to a solid, though not super, international career in theatrical and ancillary markets. Renewed interest in the vampire genre, manifested at the multiplexes by Twilight and in critical circles by Sweden’s Let the Right One In, should add to the work’s commercial potential. ... Since his breakthrough with Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance in 2002, Park’s work has been characterised by its visual inventiveness, dark humour, intense acting performances, and strange but compelling shifts in tone. The first 90 minutes of Thirst is a robust display of these talents, but it is anchored in a melancholic lyricism that is new to Park’s oeuvre. Although the focus of its narrative movement is not always clear, in its best moments, Thirst offers something of the poetic force of cinema’s timeless masterpieces. A key plot development comes at the three quarters mark, and at this point the film displays a shift in style to the kind of highly kinetic Park Chan-wook film many viewers might have expected in the first place. Even the production design undergoes a noticeable transformation. Although logically consistent with the plot’s development, the shift is slightly unnerving, and it robs some power from what might have been an even more heartbreaking final scene. In the midst of Thirst’s swings in mood and style, it is the restrained, pitch perfect performance of Korea’s leading actor Song Kang-ho (The Host) that serves as the film’s main unifying presence. In this sense he carries the film’s broader themes of guilt, conscience and redemption almost single-handedly. Tae-ju, modelled after Zola’s Therese, is a less consistent character, despite the best efforts of young actress Kim Ok-vin. One of the film’s weaknesses is that, perhaps relying too much on the implicit link with the novel, Tae-ju’s characterisation in the screenplay lacks depth. Supporting performances, bolstered by a highly experienced cast, are excellent. Technical aspects of the work, from the smoky colour palates of Jeong Jeong-hun’s cinematography to the deliberate artifice of Ryu Seong-hee’s antique-styled production design, are as good as anything in contemporary Asian cinema.

Many people who have seen THIRST, including, to a certain extent, Darcy (Sorry Darcy if I am exaggerating! ; ), commented on the abrupt and jarring shift in the tone in the film regarding the fate of a certain character. I am one of the few who saw that shift and was not bothered by it (even less number of people did not see it at all). I think a lot of genre films-- including some really brilliant ones-- deliberately or without intention "perpetrate" these jarring tonal shifts and in many cases they are integral to their overall power. I would have been bothered a lot more if the movie started out like an Ingmar Bergman film and suddenly became an intellectually upscale version of TWILIGHT, but that's NOT what happens in the film AT ALL. And yet I am pretty sure you will read reviews that tell you that that's precisely what happens in THIRST. There is a good chance that you will be unmoved by THIRST, even bored by it. But if your initial reaction is that of befuddlement, unease, or even a vague sense of dissatisfaction, I entreat you to give it another viewing chance. There is a strong chance that you will appreciate it much more, as your brain no longer follows the plot and begins to take in details of production design, performance, directorial techniques, and so on. I don't think it's a movie for those who thought TWILIGHT was the best movie they've seen all year, but it would also be a tough sell for the few who believes SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK is markedly superior to THE WRESTLER or DARK KNIGHT. (It would be obvious to everyone that I don't share these views) It's a film much tougher to evaluate than a merely "boring" "art-house" film... it basically nullifies the distinction between "art-house" and "commercial" films.

Zu guter Letzt muß ich unbedingt noch die folgende Bemerkung Kims hervorheben:

And I don't think I will ever have any respect left for a European or American critic who AGAIN brings up someone like Quentin Tarantino in relation to Park Chan-wook... it's like calling Donnie Yen "a martial arts actor in the mold of Steve Segal," you know what I mean?

Oldboy gehört zu meinen absoluten Lieblingsfilmen und vom Regisseur verfolg ich alles (auch wenn mir manches nicht gefallen hat) ABER wenn ich noch EINEN Vampir sehe dieses Jahr, dann übergeb ich mich. Was ist denn das momentan???? True Blood, Twilight, Let the right one in...South Park hat sich auch schon über das Phänomen lustig gemacht. Mir geht die Vampirfilmwelle jedenfalls allmählich echt auf den Geist.

von THIRST erhoffe ich mir sehr viel, wäre schon, wenn der es hierzuland ins kino schaffen würde.

Davon kann man doch wohl ausgehen, schließlich hat es seit "Oldboy" jeder Film von Park Chan-Wook in die Kinos geschafft (jetzt mal "Cut" nicht dazugezählt). Würde mich sehr wundern, wenn das diesmal anders wäre!

ehrlich gesagt war der red band trailer der erste trailer den ich von THIRST gesehen
habe, da ich zufällig bei worstpreviews.com darauf gestoßen bin!
danach habe ich mir die hier bereits geposteten trailer angesehen, als ich den
thread zum film gefunden habe.
bisher habe ich nur in dem einen o. anderen artikel von dem film gelesen!
und nach den bildern zu den (schriftlichen) infos interessiert er mich nun "so richtig"!
außerdem interessieren mich asiatische ("phantastische") filme schon immer, ob mit
oder ohne gore!

vielleicht hab' ich mich jetzt deutlicher ausgedrückt.
konnte ja nicht ahnen, dass meine aussage gleich auf den gore anteil reduziert wird!

Aber nicht die Erwartungen ZU HOCH schrauben, das ist immer ein schlechter Ratgeber!

Überhaupt Südkore, geniales Land. Die besten Filme on earth, verdammt gute Firmen (Samsung, LG...), ultra geniale Fans (man erinnere sich nur an die WM in Japan/Südkorea und die Rote Hölle) - ich glaub da muss ich mal hin!

Wenn da nur dieser Nordflecken nicht wäre, wobei das normale Volk da wahrscheinlich auch nichts für kann.
